Halloween is approaching us once again, and it is not just for the kids anymore. Many people like to take their dogs with them when they go out trick or treating. This is a great way to not only give your dog some exercise but to get some good family time in as well. There are, however, some things to think about before embarking on this adventure.

You will want to be sure that your dog does not spook easily. Many of the costumes and decorations can be terrifying to them, and a scared dog is a danger to everyone, including themselves. You will also want them to be animal friendly as well as people friendly.

Make sure to double-check the equipment. Inspect the pet collar and dog leash for any damage. If using a dog harness make sure it fits properly. Take a few minutes to look in on your local weather conditions. Remember, if it is cold for you, it is cold for them too. Be sure to not forget the supplies to clean up after your dog, just in case they decide to relieve themselves. Leaving a pile for someone else to step in is not only inconsiderate, but it could really put a damper on their night.

Be mindful of others. There are many people who are afraid of dogs, especially the larger breeds. Try to use a dog leash that does not give too much distance between you and your dog. This can make some people nervous. Another idea is to buy a glow stick and attach it to the pet collar or to the dog leash. This ensures that everyone can see that there is a dog with you, so they can change their route if they are uncomfortable with animals.

If you choose to leave your dog at home, make sure they are secure. Check the yard for escape routes when leaving them outside. If your dog is tied up in a yard with no fence, please be sure they cannot get too close to the sidewalk. Having a dog charge at you in the darkness across a yard to end up just a few feet away from you with teeth snarling can be very horrifying. I know this from experience.

For those of you who decide to go for it, there is only one thing left to do. Figure out how you want your friendly pooch to look. Do you want to go all out and get them their own costume? Maybe you want to keep things simple with just a little flair on the dog leash. Perhaps you will choose to take them "as is". So pick your style, get creative, and have fun!
